My Affiliate Marketing Journey: The Truth No One Talks About

My Affiliate Marketing Journey in 2025

Hello guys,

I shouldn't really share this, but this is the honest story of my affiliate marketing journey.

When I first had the thought of making money, I was still in high school. I had a strong desire to earn an income, even though I wasn't sure how to achieve it. I tried blogging, dropshipping, and freelancing, but I became discouraged. I was disappointed in myself because I didn't even have a phone then. All I had was ambition.

I was later introduced to affiliate marketing by one of my friends. At first, I wasn't convinced because I needed to build trust before recommending products.

I have always loved skincare, so I thought, "Why not become a skincare affiliate?" I could recommend skincare products, share affiliate links, and earn commissions. But I wanted to do it differently. I wanted to build trust and only recommend products that were safe and genuinely helpful.

With that ambition and clear intention, I created a skincare channel focused on skincare tips and helping people earn online. At first, there was little progress and no sales. I encouraged myself, believing everything would work out. I searched for female affiliate marketers for inspiration, but I wasn't getting the results I hoped for. Still, I didn't stop, even though the channel wasn't successful.

I saw many ambitious young people succeeding in online businesses through hard work and dedication. I wanted financial independence and a better future for myself.

However, I struggled with social anxiety and lacked confidence. I was confused, but I remembered the saying, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." So I decided to start.

At first, I didn't have the right mindset. I saw everything as a competition and spent time trying to impress people who weren't really interested. Then I started promoting my work on WhatsApp, and I got my first client.

Was everything perfect after that? No.

Even though my client got what she wanted, I still wasn't satisfied with myself. I continued learning and improving.

Eventually, I created another WhatsApp channel and started Pinterest. Growth was slow at first, but gradually I built my brand, Glow and Earn with Nduoma.

My Pinterest journey hasn't been stable. There have been ups and downs, and there still are. But that's part of the process.

The main lesson from this journey is that nothing worthwhile comes easily. There is a season when we must grow, learn, and become the best version of ourselves, not someone else. If we want financial independence, we must be willing to go through challenges to get there.

Just as gold must pass through fire before it becomes valuable, we also have to go through difficulties before becoming stronger, wiser, and more successful.

Free Traffic vs. Paid traffic; What Beginners should use

Discover the difference between organic and paid traffic, and learn which method beginners should focus on to grow their online business effectively.
Introduction
Driving traffic to your website, blog, or social media is the lifeblood of any online business. If you’re a beginner in affiliate marketing, e-commerce, or content creation, you might be wondering:
Should I rely on free traffic, or invest in paid traffic?
In this blog, we’ll break down organic traffic vs paid traffic, explain their pros and cons, and help you decide what beginners should use first to grow efficiently.
1. What is Organic Traffic?
Organic traffic is the visitors who come to your site naturally, without you paying for ads.
Examples of Organic Traffic:
Pinterest pins
Google search results
Social media posts (Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok)
Shares from friends or communities
Pros of Organic Traffic for Beginners:
Free: You don’t pay per click
Trust-building: People who find you naturally often trust you more
Sustainable: Once content ranks, traffic can continue indefinitely
Cons:
Slower results: It may take weeks or months to see significant traffic
Requires effort: You need consistent content creation and SEO
2. What is Paid Traffic?
Paid traffic comes from advertising—you pay platforms to bring people to your site.
Examples of Paid Traffic:
Facebook Ads
Google Ads
Pinterest Ads
Instagram Promotions
Pros of Paid Traffic:
Immediate results: Visitors start coming the moment you launch your campaign
Targeted: You can show your content to people who are more likely to buy or engage
Scalable: Easy to increase reach by adding more budget
Cons:
Costly for beginners: Ads can drain your budget if not managed properly
Learning curve: You need to understand targeting, copywriting, and analytics
Temporary: Traffic stops when your budget stops
3. Organic Traffic vs Paid Traffic: Side-by-Side

4. What Beginners Should Use
For most beginners, organic traffic is the best place to start.
Why Organic Traffic First:
Low risk: You can experiment without losing money
Builds skills: You learn SEO, content creation, and audience understanding
Establishes authority: People trust content they find naturally
Once you have a foundation and understand your audience, paid traffic can accelerate growth. Think of it as boosting something that already works, not starting from scratch.
5. Practical Tips for Beginners to Grow Organic Traffic
Leverage Pinterest:
Create pins for your blog posts or products. Pinterest is beginner-friendly and free.
Optimize Your Content for SEO:
Use clear titles, meta descriptions, and keywords (e.g., “beginner traffic strategies,” “free traffic ideas”).
Use Social Media Strategically:
Post valuable content on WhatsApp, Instagram, or TikTok to direct followers to your blog.
Engage Your Audience:
Answer comments and messages to build trust—people who trust you are more likely to take action.
6. When to Consider Paid Traffic
Once you have:
A clear understanding of your audience
Content that already converts organically
A small budget you can safely test
…then start experimenting with paid ads to boost what works.
As a beginner, start with organic traffic. It’s free, builds trust, and teaches you valuable skills that paid traffic cannot.
Once your content and strategies are working, then paid traffic can be added to scale faster.
Remember: Consistency + value = results. Traffic is only as good as the content you provide.

Why most Affiliate Marketers don't make First SaleπŸ€”.

Affiliate Marketing has become one of the most popular ways to make money online. Many people start because it requires little capital and can be done with just a phone and internet connection. However, a common frustration among beginners is that they spend weeks or even months promoting products without making their first affiliate sale.
The truth is that affiliate marketing works, but many beginners unknowingly make mistakes that's prevent them from getting results. Understanding these mistakes can help you adjust your strategy and move closer to your first sale.
In this article, we will explore the main reasons why most affiliate marketers struggle to make their first sale and how you can avoid these mistakes.
1) Choosing the wrong products to promote
One of most common reasons beginners fail in affiliate marketing is promoting the wrong products. Many new affiliate marketers choose products simply because the commission looks attractive. However, a high commission does not guarantee that people will buy the product. If the product is not useful, trustworthy or relevant to your audience, people will ignore it.
How to fix this
Instead of choosing products randomly, focus on products that:
. Solve a specific problem
. Are useful to your audience
. Have positive reviews
. Match your content niche
For example, if your niche is skincare, promoting skincare tools, routines or affordable skincare products will work better than promoting unrelated products.
2) Promoting without building trust
Another major reason many affiliate marketers do not make their first sale is that they promote links without building trust with their audience.
People rarely buy products from someone they don't trust. If your content only focus on posting links without providing value, people may ignore your recommendations.
How to fix this
Build trust by;
. Sharing helpful tips
. Explaining how products work
. Giving honest recommendations
. Creating educational content
When people see that your content is helpful and authentic they are more likely to trust your suggestions and purchase through your links.
3) Lack of consistent content
Consistency is extremely important in affiliate marketing. Many beginners give up too quickly or post content irregularly. Affiliate marketing is a long term strategy often take time before they start bringing consistent traffic. If you stop posting too early, your content will not have enough time to grow.
How to fix this
Focus on consistent content creation by;
. Writing blog posts regularly
. Creating Pinterest pins consistently
. Sharing useful tips on your social platforms.
Consistency helps your content reach more people over time.
4)  Not understanding your target audience
Many beginners promote products without understanding who their audience is. If you try to promote to everyone, your message becomes too general and ineffective. Successful affiliate marketers understand their audience's needs, problems and interests.
Before promoting any products, ask yourself
. Who is this product for?
. What problem does it solve?
. Why would someone need it?
Understanding your audience allows you to create content that connects with them and encourages them to take action.
5) Expecting immediate results
Affiliate marketing is often advertised as a quick way to make money online. This creates unrealistic expectations for beginners. In reality, affiliate marketing requires patience, learning and consistent efforts.
Some marketers get their first sale quickly, while others may take several months. This doesn't mean the strategy is not working.
How to fix this
Instead of focusing only on sales, focus on;
. Creating valuable content
. Learning marketing strategies
. Growing your audience
Overtime, these efforts will increase your chances of making sales.
6) Poor Traffic Strategy
Traffic is essential for affiliate marketing. If people are not seeing your content, they cannot click your links or buy the products you recommend.
Many beginners post their affiliate links randomly without strategy to attract clicks.
How to fix this
Focus on platforms that generate long-term such as;
. Blogging
. Pinterest
. Search - based content
For example, writing helpful blog posts and creating Pinterest pins can bring traffic to your content for months or even years.
Affiliate Marketing is a powerful opportunity but success doesn't happen overnight. Many beginners fail to make their first sale because they choose the wrong products to promote without building trust or give up too quickly.
By focusing on valuable content, understanding your audience and using consistent marketing strategies, you can increase your chances of making first affiliate sale.
Remember that affiliate marketing is a journey of patience and persistence. The more you learn and improve your strategy, the closer you move towards your first successful sale.

How to start affiliate marketing in Nigeria as Beginners (2026 guide)

 WHAT IS AFFILIATE MARKETING?

Affiliate marketing, for beginners is a type of online business where you earn a commission by promoting other company's product or service. Your main job is to recommend the product to the right people and guide them to buy through your unique affiliate link. When someone clicks your affiliate link and buys, you get paid.

Think of it like this:

You're a digital salesman, you promote through

  • Blogs
  • Social media
  • WhatsApp
  • YouTube
  • Pinterest
  • Email
Let's say, your focus is on skincare, you can write a skincare blog,
  • You write a blog post: ' Best sunscreens for oily skin'
  • You add affiliate links to the sunscreens you recommend.
  • A reader clicks your link and buys one
  • The brand pays you a commission
You didn't manufacture the product but promoted it by bringing in more buyers to the products, now that's affiliate marketing.
The strategies are still applicable worldwide, let that not be your limitations πŸ‘
